Before you sign: website ownership and cancellation

Most people choose a website provider on price and design. The things that actually protect you, though, are in the terms: who owns what, and what happens if the relationship ends. These questions rarely matter on day one — and matter enormously the day you want to leave, rebrand, or move on. Ask them before you sign, of any provider, including us.

Who owns the domain?

Your domain name is your address on the internet, and it should be registered in your business’s name, with you as the owner — not locked inside a provider’s account where you cannot get it back. Ask directly: is the domain mine, and can I take it with me if I leave? If the answer is unclear, that is a warning sign. A fair provider makes sure the domain is yours.

What happens to your site and content if you cancel?

On a subscription model, the website is a service, so it is normal that the live hosted site stops when payments stop — but you should know exactly how, and how much notice and grace you get. Ask what happens to your content and your account after cancellation, and for how long it is kept before deletion. Clear answers here mean no nasty surprises. Vague ones mean you could lose work overnight.

Can you cancel, and how?

A confident provider does not trap you. Look for the ability to cancel anytime, without penalty, and a clear, simple process to do it. Beware long lock-in contracts and cancellation terms buried in fine print. The freedom to leave is also the best sign that a provider intends to keep earning your business month after month.
